Morrison Report

  1. He needs a scanner.
  2. He needs a printer.
  3. He needs a program which will allow him to have an application running while still keeping his computer ‘locked’ (password protected upon closing/task switching from the program).
  4. He needs a word processor.
  5. He needs a LAN connection (to easily transfer documents from his desktop to his laptop).
  6. He needs a spreadsheet program.
  7. He needs an external hard drive or DVD writing software (and hardware) for backups.

Critical Factor

Success Criteria

1

  1. His computer must be fast enough to process the information gained from the scanner.
  2. His computer must have sufficient memory to store the data received from the scanner.

2

  1. His printer must print with sufficient detail.
  2. His printer may need to have the option of printing in colour.

3

  1. The software must be quick but not take up too much of the CPU. It must be easy to switch between tasks.
  2. The computer must have sufficient CPU and hard drive space to run the application without lagging.

4

  1. The word processor must be easy to use. It must be able to use and manipulate many different types of files (perhaps a .bit file or a .jpg file).
  2. The word processor must be fast to load and quick to save with an auto-save and auto-backup function installed.

5

  1. His LAN connection should have the option of being wireless, in order to choose between the convenience of being able to move around while transferring files, and the speed of direct (cable) transfer.
  2. The LAN settings should include a WEP key or other security functions to prevent hacking.
  3. He should keep a direct cable, in case something happens with the LAN.

6

  1. The spreadsheet program should be compatible with his word processor. He should be able to use files from each either one.

7

  1. His external hard drive (a lot more convenient than DVD’s) should have sufficient hard drive space to save all of his files. If this isn’t possible, he should use DVD’s also, as a way of storing the older data when the external is too full.

Evaluating Options

Software:

Word Processor

Spreadsheet

-          Get integrated packages that will make data transference between the two easily.

Hardware:

                At least 2Gb Memory

A good quality screen with high resolution and large surface area.

160Gig Hard Drive (min space) + External storage system.

                DVD reader/writer (16X speed)

Windows XP Professional SP2 (Easier to use and more compatible. Can be upgraded to Vista when more compatible software is developed.)

HP Compaq Miniature Laptop: $900 (w/out OS) $1899 (XP Professional SP2 included)

Option 2: Desktop Computer

                Dual Core Processor 3.2Ghz

3.5Gig Memory (Maximum that XP can address) With expandable memory capacity (to at least 4Gig) for after upgrade to Vista).

A good quality screen with high resolution and large surface area.

320Gig HD + External Storage System

DVD reader/writer (16X Speed)
